Spiritual Warfare & Demonology

Ephesians 6:10-18, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The Position

Real and active. Two levels: spiritual (blood of Christ at new birth) and mental (renewing of the mind). A Christian cannot be demon-possessed.

The Study

## Core Position

Spiritual warfare is real, present, and the active responsibility of every believer. Satan is a real being — a fallen angel, not a metaphor or symbol. Demons are real, active in the world, and fully subject to the authority of the believer in Christ's name. The Christian does not fight for victory — they enforce a victory already won at the cross and resurrection.

Demons cannot possess a born-again Christian. They can oppress a Christian through external influence. The indwelling Holy Spirit and the possession of a demon are mutually exclusive — the temple of God cannot be simultaneously occupied by the enemy.

The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:10-12"We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." The war is real. The enemy is real and specifically identified.

1 Peter 5:8"Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

John 10:10"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy."

Revelation 12:9 — Satan described as the deceiver of the whole world.

The Believer's Authority

Luke 10:18-19"I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy." Authority is delegated and total — over all the power of the enemy.

Mark 16:17"In my name they will cast out demons." Deliverance is normative for believers — not reserved for specialists.

Colossians 2:15"He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him." Victory already accomplished at the cross.

Revelation 12:11"They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."

James 4:7"Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." Two-part command — submission first, resistance second. Order matters.

Possession vs. Oppression — The Line for Believers

Demons cannot possess a born-again Christian. They can oppress a Christian through external influence.

1 Corinthians 6:19"Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you."
1 John 4:4"He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
2 Corinthians 6:14-16"What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God."

A born-again believer indwelt by the Holy Spirit cannot be simultaneously possessed by a demon. The Spirit and demonic possession cannot coexist in the same temple. However, external oppression — harassment, accusation, temptation, circumstantial attack — is real and experienced by believers. The enemy operates on the outside, not the inside, of the genuinely born-again believer.

Possession — internal occupation and control. Impossible for a genuine believer indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
Oppression — external influence, attack, harassment, temptation. Real and experienced by believers. Resisted through the authority of Christ and the full armor of God.

The Open Door Principle

An un-renewed mind and un-crucified flesh are not demonic possession — but they are territory the enemy exploits through oppression. The believer's responsibility in warfare includes keeping the mind renewed (Romans 12:2), crucifying the flesh daily (Galatians 5:24), putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-17), and maintaining submission to God before resisting the enemy (James 4:7).

Un-surrendered areas of the mind and flesh do not give the enemy access to the inside — but they give him a platform to work from the outside.

The Full Armor of God — Ephesians 6:13-17

Belt of truth — the Word as the foundation of identity and reality.
Breastplate of righteousness — right standing in Christ protecting the heart.
Feet shod with the gospel of peace — stability and forward movement in the gospel.
Shield of faith — extinguishing the flaming arrows of accusation and doubt.
Helmet of salvation — protecting the mind, the primary battlefield.
Sword of the Spirit — the Word of God as the only offensive weapon.

What This Rejects

Satan as metaphor or symbol — 1 Peter 5:8, Revelation 12:9 describe a personal, active being.
Christians can be demon-possessed — 1 Corinthians 6:19, 1 John 4:4 — the Spirit and demonic possession are mutually exclusive.
Believers have no authority over demons — Luke 10:19 — authority given over all the power of the enemy.
Spiritual warfare is only metaphorical — Ephesians 6:12 names the enemy specifically.
Victory is still being won — Colossians 2:15 — already accomplished; believers enforce it, not achieve it.
