Deliverance & Exorcism
Mark 16:17, Romans 12:2, Exodus 14:26-28
The Position
Real and active. Two levels: spiritual (the blood of Christ at new birth) and mental (renewing of the mind). You don't go back to old sin because a demon has you.
The Study
## Core Position
Deliverance is real, active, and the provision of Christ for every born-again believer. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36). Deliverance operates on two levels simultaneously: spiritual (through the blood of Christ and the Holy Spirit) and mental (through the renewing of the mind). A born-again believer cannot be demon-possessed — the Holy Spirit and demonic possession are mutually exclusive. But a believer can be oppressed externally and can return to bondage by choice. True deliverance is evidenced by the ability to love and pray for your enemies.
The Egypt Model of Deliverance
The Exodus is the primary biblical model for understanding deliverance:
Exodus 14 — The pattern:
1. Israel delivered from Egypt — the enemy (Egypt/Pharaoh) is behind them. The only thing in front of them requires faith to overcome. You know you are in the right spot when the enemy is behind you and faith is in front of you.
2. The waters parted — God makes a way where there is no way. They walked through on dry ground — not ankle-deep water. God does not do a miracle halfway. A half-healing is not God's fault — it is unbelief.
3. Turn around and put the enemy to death — After crossing, Moses stretched his hand back over the sea and the waters returned and covered Pharaoh and all his army. Not one of them remained. This is the part most people miss. You have been delivered — but have you destroyed the enemy?
4. Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore — When someone says "you're still an addict, you're still a sinner" — Egypt is way over there and the Egyptians are floating in the water. I've been delivered.
Two Levels of Deliverance
Spiritual Deliverance — accomplished by the blood of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit at new birth. The old nature is crucified. You have been set free.
Mental Deliverance — Romans 12:2 — "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind." The spirit is already delivered. The mind must get right. You are not going back to alcohol because the same demon has you in bondage. You are going back because you want to. You have not been transformed yet.
The pattern: spiritually delivered at new birth, mentally transformed through the watering of the Word over time. Both are required for full, lasting freedom.
A Christian Cannot Be Demon-Possessed
1 Corinthians 6:19 — "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you."
1 John 4:4 — "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
A believer can be tormented by demons externally — tempted with lusts that already live in the flesh. But possession is internal occupation and control. The Spirit and demonic possession cannot coexist in the same temple.
The Bondage Categories
Internal tyrants (from within): sin and guilt, anger, fear and anxiety, unforgiveness and bitterness, negative self-talk, unrenewed thought patterns.
External tyrants (from without): the past, addictions (even after deliverance), divorce and relational wounds, accidents and trauma, failure and fear of trying again, financial bondage, offense, religion and legalism, other people including family.
You do not need a bunch of people praying around you to cast the devil out of you if you have been born again and the Holy Spirit is in you. The problem is often not demonic possession — it is an unrenewed mind voluntarily returning to sin. That requires repentance and transformation, not another exorcism.
Deliverance Requires Authority
Mark 16:17 — "In my name they will cast out demons." Normative for believers.
Luke 10:17-19 — The seventy returned rejoicing that demons were subject to them in Christ's name.
Acts 19:11-16 — The sons of Sceva had no genuine authority. The demon overpowered them. Authority is real and is not transferable by formula.
Deliverance operates in the authority of the name of Jesus. It is not about volume, emotional intensity, or personal holiness level. It is positional authority as a son of God.
You Cannot Go Back Once Delivered
You cannot be delivered from Egypt and return to Egypt voluntarily. The enemy is behind you. If you turn back you are delivering yourself back to your oppressors. Once delivered: stop submitting yourself back to the old sin. The enemy has no power to force you back — you go back because you choose to. The battle has shifted to the mind — Romans 12:2. Cast down vain imaginations and bring every thought captive to Christ — 2 Corinthians 10:5.
The Evidence of True Deliverance
Luke 6:27-31 — "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you."
You know you have been truly delivered when you can pray for your oppressor. If you cannot pray for them yet, you have not let the waters cover Pharaoh. You are still living in the past. That is the test. Not performance — love. Not perfection — the ability to bless those who cursed you.
What This Rejects
Christians can be demon-possessed — 1 Corinthians 6:19, 1 John 4:4.
Every struggle requires a fresh exorcism — often the issue is an unrenewed mind voluntarily returning to sin.
Deliverance is only spiritual — Romans 12:2 — the mind must also be transformed.
You can be permanently free without responsibility — after deliverance the believer must not submit themselves back to the old sin.
