The Tribulation Period
Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:21, Revelation 12:11
The Position
Seven-year period of unprecedented trial. The church is present through it and overcomes by the blood of the Lamb.
The Study
## Core Position
The tribulation is a literal future seven-year period of unprecedented judgment on the earth. The first three and a half years are the beginning of sorrows. The final three and a half years — the great tribulation — are the most severe, triggered when the Antichrist sits in the rebuilt temple and declares himself God. The church goes through this period, preserved by God but not removed from it. It culminates in the physical return of Christ.
Supporting Scripture
Daniel 9:27 — The 70th week — seven years. The Antichrist confirms a covenant with many, then breaks it at the midpoint — stopping sacrifice and offering.
Matthew 24:8 — "All these are but the beginning of the birth pains." The first half — increasing sorrows building toward the worst.
Matthew 24:21 — "For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be." The great tribulation — the second half.
Matthew 24:13 — "But the one who endures to the end will be saved." Endurance through — not removal from.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 — "The man of lawlessness... takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God." The midpoint marker.
Revelation 7:14 — "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation." Saints present in and through the tribulation.
Revelation 6-19 — The sequential unfolding of the tribulation — seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls of wrath poured out progressively.
The Structure of the Seven Years
First 3.5 years — Beginning of Sorrows:
- Wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution increasing
- Antichrist rises, confirms a covenant with Israel
- Matthew 24:4-8 describes this period
Midpoint Marker:
- Antichrist breaks the covenant
- Sits in the temple and declares himself God (2 Thessalonians 2:4)
- Matthew 24:15 — "The abomination of desolation standing in the holy place"
- From this point the final 3.5 years begin
Final 3.5 years — The Great Tribulation:
- The most severe judgment in human history
- The bowl judgments of Revelation 15-16
- Matthew 24:21 — "such as has not been from the beginning of the world"
- Culminates in the Battle of Armageddon and Christ's return
The Third Temple Connection
The Antichrist sitting in the temple (2 Thessalonians 2:4) presupposes a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. This is one of the clearest prophetic prerequisites for the midpoint of the tribulation. The stone inside the Dome of the Rock — the Foundation Stone — is where the ark of the covenant stood and where the Day of Atonement blood was poured. The rebuilding of the temple and the resumption of sacrificial worship is a prophetic prerequisite.
The Church Through the Tribulation
John 17:15 — Jesus prayed not for removal but for preservation through.
Revelation 7:9-14 — A great multitude coming out of the great tribulation.
Revelation 20:4 — Tribulation martyrs included in the first resurrection — they were present during the tribulation.
Matthew 24:13 — "The one who endures to the end will be saved." Endurance is the call — not escape.
What This Rejects
Pre-trib removal before tribulation begins — Matthew 24:29-31, Revelation 7:14, John 17:15.
Symbolic or non-literal tribulation — Matthew 24:21; Revelation 6-19 describes specific, sequential, literal judgments.
No future rebuilt temple — 2 Thessalonians 2:4, Daniel 9:27.
